This research, conducted by a research assistant at the University of Nigeria, Enugu with the help of volunteer researchers, was designed to understand more about the gambling habits of the public in the context of the 2024 European Football Championship. It involved an ethnographic fieldwork methodology and 197 participants were recruited from different gambling establishments in Enugu state, Nigeria. They were a mix of male and female, young and older adults, married and non-married with varying socio-demographic characteristics.
The research found that the gambling behaviour of young people in the light of the European Championship closely mirrored their previous experiences and those who didn’t gamble before the tournament continued not to do so afterwards. They also reported that they observed safer gambling messages but that these were short, vague or easy to miss.
